Storytelling – Animation is Mesmerizing

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2012

In a previous post I said I would write a couple of tips on good storytelling.  Here’s the third of three.

Facial expressions, body gestures, and vocal tone add character to telling a tale.  However, the size of an audience dictates the amount of body language you might use in your account of a story.  With a large audience distance can be a problem.  So what can you do?  Pulling out a power point is not the answer if that’s what you were thinking.  Short of jumping up and down, with arms waving frantically to keep an audiences attention, the other choice is vocal animation combined with those carefully chosen words that I talked about in a previous post.

Combine your words in ways that perhaps your audience has never heard them before.  Think about giving your words certain tones and pitches.  Enunciate your words to match their meaning. Volume is your best friend and inserting a whispering sentence to a large audience while bending forward just a little adds an unexpected dynamic to your presentation.  Of course it should be appropriate to your content.  I use this technique almost every time I am public speaking.  You have to give it a try.  It’s so much fun to watch your audience lean forward and even sit up straighter in their seats.  Use a rhythmic cadence and change it up.  That adds more color in your words.  Don’t forget that silence is a beautiful thing.  Add pauses or even stop in mid-sentence.  Animation engages and mesmerizes your audience.  It may even get you a standing O!

Kiss and Tell the Story

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012

In a previous post I said I would write a couple of tips on good storytelling.  Here’s the second of three.

We all know the KISS rule.  Keep It Simple Silly. That means for me – stick to the story.

Every story has a beginning, middle and an end.

Start with the OMG, listen to this.  Grab the listener’s attention at the beginning with your dramatic headline.  I call it the hook – they can’t wait to hear more.

Draw them into your story by picking and choosing your words like you were selecting one flower at a time to create a magnificent bouquet.  The use of choice words create a picture in a listeners mind.  By doing that, the story teller taps into our imagination and transports us to a scene outside ourselves.

A good storyteller creates the end with an exact closing moment.  They know when  to return us to our own thoughts and experiences and leave us saying wow!

Go  for it and create your own magical mystery tour.

Storytelling – The Heart and Art of the Matter

Monday, May 21st, 2012

In my last post I said I would write a couple of tips on good storytelling.  Here’s the first of three.

Words can Wow – vocabulary selection can make or break a good story.  As an artist, words are like paint colors to me.   Depending on when and where they are used each word holds hue, and value. They paint a picture or scene.   Be authentic when choosing words that express and reflect the emotional component of the story that you are sharing.  Feel the words you choose and your audience will feel them too.   Emotions, after all, are contagious!

Your Wish Is My Command

Thursday, April 19th, 2012

The Play it Forward Lulu cube has been launched!  It happened in the small town of Peoria, Illinois on April 17th.  That’s the day that the YWCA’s Leaders Luncheon was held.  The YWCA is the largest provider of homeless services in the community.  The average age of a homeless person in Peoria is 10 years old; a hard truth to accept.

It was my privilege to be the keynote speaker.

Not only was I excited about being able to share my personal story of homelessness but I was also able to revisit how Designs by Lucinda was born in 1989 as the creator of pins with purpose that helped the homeless.  The YWCA had 3 wishes.  More volunteers, more people talking about their cause and more donations.

As the keynote unfolded it became clear that the audience held the hope for changing the lives of the homeless in Peoria.  They learned that they are part of the solution.  As the speaker, I wanted to give them MORE than something to think about as a take away.  I needed to give them some thing to do, a simple and easy call to action.  An action step that would satisfy the 3 wishes  of the YWCA.  Ah!  I knew just what to do.  I would give them a physical take away,  something they could actually hold in their hands.  My newest fundraising idea, LULU Cubes would be perfect!

The Play It Forward LULU Cube is designed as a fundraising donation bank to be passed along from one person to another until the bank is filled with coins or bills.  As the cube is passed along the organization also gains exposure and visibility.  The donors become engaged with the organization.  YWCA, all 3 wishes are your command!  As the final note to my keynote the LULU Cube was launched right then and there!

The audience left with LULU Cubes in hand and I wondered how many other hands they will reach, how many new people will learn that the new homeless, 10 yr olds and about the services the YWCA is providing to those children and their families.  I said a silent little prayer “let the LULU Cubes be filled”.  As I watched my ever so attentive audience depart one by one toting their LULU Cube, I smiled as I realized that was my applause!

You can see what happens and follow the LULU Cubes in Peoria on this Facebook Page.

You can dress me up but do I want to go out?

An annual major fundraising event can be a time when a non profit has a chance to turn attendees into donors and ambassadors for their organization.  I went to two of them last week.  Here’s what happened at one.

The first was a $150 a plate fundraising dinner.  Looking forward all week long to a great evening and a good meal I went shopping for a new dress.

Here’s the shakedown.  The evening  started with a cocktail hour and then a sit down meal.  I chose vegetarian.  It was average at best.  The keynote speaker presented during the meal.  Since I am a speaker at events like this I watched closely and in my book this is a BIG no no.  This causes people in the audience who are trying to eat to have to turn around in their chairs to see the speaker.  It’s uncomfortable for the guests AND it’s rude to the speaker to be honest.  Then, sadly the executive director missed the opportunity to speak passionately and with authenticity about the non profit.  Instead she told us she had adjusted well in her new position as it was her first full year on the job.  Ho hum

The icing on the cake?… and no pun intended here but get this…finally the tiny cupcake wrapped in cellophane that had been sitting on the table in front of me all evening to my astonishment was dessert!   It was donated by a discount wholesale food club and the E.D. thought it worthy enough to be mentioned aloud!  Good Lord who knows how long that thing had been sitting in a warehouse somewhere!

I can live with an average meal, however I would have liked to have been able to respectfully give my full attention to the speaker.  Most importantly,  I wished the ED inspired me to make an effort to become a serious donor.   Come on it was a fundraiser!  Lastly, and I am no snob but seriously  for 150 bucks I expect more than a twinkie.

You can dress me up AND you can take me out but unfortunately next year when this event comes around I’ll enjoy the best part; shopping for the new dress and just skip the rest.

Custom Design Fundraising Pin For NOVACO

This a very cool custom pin we designed for NOVACO.

They have been very successful with these designs and I am sure they will sell allot more of them at this event.  Can’t wait to see you all!

Next week is the Cure Breast Cancer for ME luncheon where I am going to kick off my new idea.  It’s called ITAGU.ME. tag.   I am going to play tag with the 650 attendees.  Each person will have the chance to purchase an ITAGU.ME tag for $10 AND send one to a friend.  It’s a play it forward game that raises money and gets a buzz going.  The tags can be used as a key chain, attached to a purse zipper, a gym bag, or as a dog tag around the neck.  There are probably a million more uses that you can think of for the tags.   Lisa is putting together a page on our website for the ITAGU.ME tags and we’ll let you know as soon as it’s ready.  More on this later.
